Many lands are best protected if landowners are motivated to pursue economically viable alternatives to development. A conservation easement is a voluntary, legal agreement between a landowner and a non-profit land trust which permanently restricts use of the land for agricultural production, wildlife habitat or open space.

Coastal Mountains Land Trust

Coastal Mountains Land Trust was founded in 1986 by a small group of citizens intent upon preservation of Beech Hill in Rockport, a 572-acre property featuring critical scenic and ecological values–rolling blueberry barrens, forests, a historic stone house, and the most scenically unique summit of the Camden Hills. A limited development conservation easement was designed to protect this important landmark of the western Penobscot Bay landscape, a very prominent launch for their land conservation program. They permanently conserve land to benefit the natural and human communities of western Penobscot Bay.

Coastal Mountains Land Trust serves the communities of the western Penobscot Bay region. As outlined in the map, their service area includes either portions of or the entirety of 15 towns including Belfast, Belmont, Brooks, Camden, Hope, Knox, Monroe, Morrill, Northport, Lincolnville, Rockport, Searsport, Stockton Springs, Swanville and Waldo. They are happy to make themselves available to individuals and organizations within these towns that would like to discuss land conservation options.

Since 1976, the Contemporary Arts Center has been home to artists bold experiments in painting, theater, photography, performance art, dance, music, video, education, and sculpture. The Center on Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership began in 1992 as a multidisciplinary, university-wide center developed with the support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and Grand Valley State University. In 1999, the Center was renamed in honor of Dorothy A. Johnson and her distinguished career. The Johnson Center for Philanthropy is a university-based academic center serving nonprofits, foundations, and others that seek to transform their communities for the common good, and is adapting constantly to changing conditions.
